It was an historic ceremony at West End Mixed Secondary School, Asaba, the Delta State capital, as various stakeholders from different strata of the society converged for the launch of the Scouts for Sustainable development goals SDGs in Delta, the first state in the federation to officially launch Scouts for SDGs in Nigeria.
The Scouts for SDGs initiative which presents a unique strategy to engage the youngsters in the development of their communities, also provides an opportunity for the young ones to learn valuable skills such as courage, kindness, determination, and problem solving, according to the Special Assistant to the Governor on SDGs, Diana Ereyitomi Eyo-Enoette, who received the investiture as the State Headquarters Commissioner, Scouts for SDGs.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services, and Girl Child Development, Ms. Orode Uduaghan, the state is involved in making the relevance of current SDG indicators in delta-specific contexts, analysing possible linkages and synergies, and then ‘localising’ the agenda in order to produce a ‘delta-oriented’ account for future SDG implementation and review.

The United Nations 2030 Agenda identified 17 specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a shared blueprint for climate action across all countries in global partnership. SDGs are global in nature, but locally led actions are seen to be vitally important in building sustainable communities. Our work in this area aims to understand which SDG interlinkages matter the most in order to allows stakeholders to focus on targets with strong synergies, understand trade-offs and make SDG implementation and review more coherent at a delta-scale.
